English Contests: Writing Essays, Writing Poetry, and Poetry Out Loud

Writing: There are two contests coming up which are open to high school students, and we encourage all of our writers to compete. The first is the Robert J Stuckey Essay Contest which offers cash prizes for original essays. The second is the Beverly Hopkins Memorial Poetry Contest. There is no fee for applying to either, and we have found our students to be quite successful in these types of contests. Additionally, we hope to show our students that their writing is “real” and appropriate for publication. We believe they can win!

Poetry Out Loud: Again this year, every student in the school will participate in Poetry Out Loud in January, memorizing and reciting a poem of choice to a class audience.  Grade-level winners will compete against one another on January 16th.

For more information about any of these exciting literary contests, please contact your child’s English teacher or Sarah PW, English Department Chair.
