Claire Corliss ’17

Claire represented Goucher College and her work as a part of their Voter Mobilization Team as the college was honored at the 2019 ALL IN Challenge Awards Ceremony. Goucher received a gold seal from ALL IN for achieving a student voter engagement rate between 40% and 49%. Claire and her classmates helped register and mobilize voters, and represented Goucher at an awards ceremony in Washington, DC. Read the full article. (2019/11)

Andy Zhang ’17

Andy is finishing up his final year at the University of Southern California, having interned this summer at Ernst & Young. He recently signed a offer to return full time upon graduation to work in their Financial Services Risk Advisory Practice. 

At USC, Andy is President of the Chinese Students & Scholars Association (USC CSSA). "We have 10 departments, with over 200 staff members, all recruited through applications and interviews and no membership fees. We provide services and resources aiming to enrich the college experience for the Chinese student community on campus, through various events including career development, cultural celebrations, health and safety panels, sports tournaments, entertainment activities, and new student orientations."

Andy speaks fondly of his time at Crossroads: "Crossroads prepared me well for college in terms of the intensity of most classes. I had no issue transitioning into my new academic journey at USC, and that was largely due to the courses I took at Crossroads." (2019/11) 

Harry O’Gorman ’14

After spending the summer traveling and studying the people and cultures of India, Thailand, Greece and Spain he entered the class of 2023 at the University of Missouri Medical School. (2019/09)

Harry, a 2018 graduate (with honors) from George Washington University, received a National Institute of Health Post-Baccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award. The award will allow him to pursue laboratory research into the role of microbes in the development of immunity in the mouth and shed light onto the role of antibiotics in oral immunity. These studies may eventually provide insight into the use of probiotic treatments for oral inflammatory diseases. The laboratory is located in Bethesda, Maryland at the National Institutes of Health (NIH); the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and public health research.

This award provides employment, for select graduates, an opportunity to spend a year or two – before going on to more formal programs – working side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. (2018/09)

Nick Drake ’16

Nick, a music theatre student at Baldwin Wallace University, joined a group of 20 students for a faculty-led study abroad program in Zambia. The program provides the opportunity for students to produce a documentary about how theatre can enact social change.

This fall, Nick will be performing the role of "Lola" in BWU's production of Kinky Boots, the first production of the musical in a university setting. (2019/10)

Andrew Witherspoon ’14

Andrew was named part of the The James Jay Dudley Luce Foundation's national “Luce 24 Under 24” Awards, which recognizes game-changers twenty-four years of age or younger who are making innovative contributions to humanity. Andrew created the Chicago Furniture Bank, a nonprofit that collects donations of gently used furniture and household goods and distributes them to families and individuals transitioning into supportive housing. Congratulations Andrew!

Andrew and two partners received the University of Pennsylvania President’s Engagement Prize, an award of $100,000 and living expenses “for Penn seniors to design and undertake post-graduation projects that make a positive, lasting difference in the world.” The team launched the Chicago Furniture Bank to provide used furniture to vulnerable populations. Matthew Larson ’15

FIDE (World Chess Federation) named Matthew an International Master at its Presidential Board Meeting held on July 9. (2019/5) 

Hera Scher-Zagier ’15
Hera graduated from the Berklee College of Music in May with a degree in songwriting and a minor in recording and production. She recently moved to Nashville, where she is working for the Round Hill Music record label in artist development while collaborating with multiple musicians in the city as both a writer and performer. Tiffany Anderson ’90

As superintendent of the Topeka Unified School District (and past superintendent of the Jennings School District), Dr. Anderson is now building a College Prep Academy from scratch, drawing from her own experience at Crossroads. See the news article from the Topeka Capital-Journal.

Tiffany adds: “My experience at Crossroads is continuing to shape me and my ability to help create similar experiences for youth in underserved communities. I wanted to be sure to send a thank you to a school that helped me see a bigger purpose and ways to positively impact others.” (2018/10)

“In just over three years, Superintendent Tiffany Anderson, who oversees the Jennings School District in Jennings, a small city just outside St. Louis, has led a dramatic turnaround in one of the worst-performing systems in Missouri.” Read more from NPR. (2016/01)

Jack Raney ’17
Jack Raney is on the path to becoming a wildfire firefighter in Redding, CA, where he is stationed on an initial attack fire engine. He attained his Red Card, meeting qualifications for a beginning wildland firefighter, in the spring. He has worked in support of the Carr Fire in California and the Tinder Fire in Arizona. (2018/10)
Abby Hirshman '16
Abby earned her EMT certification in the summer of 2018 and spent the fall semester in Peru at a field station in the Amazon through The School for Field Studies.
Daniel “D.J.” Corbett ’15
DJ has been selected as an L. Keeley Construction intern for the summer of 2018. The firm, located in downtown St. Louis, specializes in building, industrial, paving, and civil/site work. (2018/06)
Regi Drake ’11
Guitarist Regi Drake joins singer-songwriter Alice Merton on her North American tour this summer. opening for Australian musician Vance Joy, as well as performing at festivals such as Governors Ball, Hangout, and BottleRock. (2018/06)
Megan M. Ferry ’85
Congratulations to Megan, Associate Professor of Chinese and Asian Studies and Chair of the Modern Languages and Literatures Department at Union College, on the publication of her book, Chinese Women Writers and Modern Print Culture, by Cambria Press.
Darcy Heine ’07
Last October, Darcy opened Fiddlehead Fern Cafe in the Shaw neighborhood, where her family has lived since the 1940s. Darcy’s stepfather served as architect for the renovation of an old gas station at the corner of Russell and Thurman, decorated in a minimalist style and featuring a bronze mirror owned by Darcy’s grandparents. Daryl McAdoo ’01
Daryl was awarded both a PhD in Higher Education and Organizational Change from the University of California-Los Angeles and an MBA with a concentration in Marketing from the USC Marshall School of Business. Daryl has yet to decide what the next step in his career will be, and is exploring opportunities in nonprofit management, education, and marketing.
Darian Randall ’14
Darian was one of 18 college students selected by the Congressional Black Caucus to take part in their Japan Study Abroad Program this spring, part of a range of programs they offer to support emerging African American leaders. (2018/06)
Julia Weinstock ’16
Julia has been selected as one of three summer Producing and Administrative interns at The Second City improvisational theater in Chicago. She will spend the summer producing content and focusing on casting and alumni outreach and networking. (2018/06)
Katie Weinstock ’12
After earning her Master of Science in occupational therapy from Boston University and passing her national board certification, Katie has accepted a position in pediatric occupational therapy in Denver, Colorado. (2018/06)
Annie Chappell ’17
Annie Chappell represents the third generation in her family to attend Oxford College of Emory University. In her freshman year, she has followed her grandfather, father, and uncle into athletics, playing on the women’s soccer team. Her father was a founder of Emory’s club baseball team in 1985; Annie wears his number, 20, on the field. (2017/12)
Homer Dula ’17
In his first year at the University of Kansas, Homer Dula has been selected as a SELF Fellow, class of 2021. Named for Al and Lila Self, the Self Engineering Leadership Fellows Program was established in 2007 “to identify and develop students who have a passion for engineering and possess a ‘fire in the belly’ mentality.”
Erin Falker ’06

Art and culture magazine Hyperallergenic featured Erin Falker’s work as Assistant Curator at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, where she helped develop the special exhibition Say it Loud: Art, History, and Rebellion, “a two-part exhibition that commemorates the 1960s rebellions, observes the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Detroit Rebellion, and compares the uprisings of the past to the upheavals that shocked our nation in the 21st century.” (2017/12)

Edward McFowland III ’05
An Assistant Professor of Information and Decision Sciences at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, Edward McFowland III has received a $47,500 grant from Adobe intended “to encourage both theoretical and empirical development of solutions to problems in marketing.” (2017/12)
Elaina Grimm ’17
Elaina Grimm attended the Young Women’s Political Leadership Program in Washington, DC, organized by Running Start, a non-partisan group that supports young women in politics. The program introduces high school students to the ins and outs of political leadership through workshops and meetings with women candidates and elected officials. (2017/12)
Ellie Turner ’14
As a 2017 Summer Fellow with the Monument Policy Group, Ellie Turner spent time in Washington, DC exploring her passion for politics and preparing for what’s next after college graduation. (2017/12)
