At Crossroads, every project has the potential to become something bigger. 🌱
A lesson can become a work of art. A science project can become a campus improvement. And students can become leaders who leave a lasting impact on the community around them.
This spring, students in Howard Granok’s ECO-ACT classes transformed a sustainability project into a work of art by painting and installing three new rain barrels to replace our well-loved, weathered setup. These barrels will help conserve rainwater, support our campus gardens, and serve as a colorful reminder that caring for our environment can be both practical and creative.
Projects like this reflect what makes Crossroads unique. We believe science and art aren’t separate disciplines: they often work hand in hand. By inviting students to approach environmental challenges through both scientific thinking and artistic expression, we create opportunities for deeper learning, stronger connections, and meaningful action.
A huge congratulations and thank you to our talented student artists and rising seniors Josie A., Abby B., Kierra C-G., Gus K., Ashtin K., Jonas M., and Kat M. Your creativity, leadership, and commitment to sustainability have made our campus a little greener, and a lot more colorful. 💙🎨🌧️

🎉 Announcing Our 2026–27 Student Interns!
At Crossroads, we believe students shouldn’t have to wait until after graduation to gain meaningful career experience.
Last spring, we launched a pilot internship program through Open Circuit, our 5th Day block where students use design thinking, community-based problem solving, and collaboration to tackle real challenges facing our school, our city, and the world. These weren’t practice projects—our interns contributed to real initiatives, including helping plan and direct the interactive mystery experience at our 2026 UNGALA for Scholarship.
For the 2026–27 school year, students interviewed and applied for internships across several departments, giving them the opportunity to build professional skills while helping shape the Crossroads community in meaningful ways. We’re thrilled to introduce this year’s team of student interns!

♟️ Yesterday, we celebrated the Crossroads chess community. Today, hear from one of its success stories.
After returning to campus for this year’s Kyle Weeks Memorial Chess Tournament, alumnus Matthew Larson ’15 sat down with Coach Howard Granok to reflect on his journey from Crossroads’ board one player to earning the prestigious title of International Master.
Matthew shares memories of his time at Crossroads, how he continued competing through college, and the perseverance that helped him achieve a goal that once felt out of reach. Now a postdoctoral researcher in Princeton University’s mathematics department, he also offered advice for today’s players:
“It’s really important to look at your games and try to learn from your mistakes, even though it can be frustrating and you want to forget them. There’s really a lot of information and lessons you can get from your previous games.”
Whether you’re studying chess, math, or any other passion, Matthew’s message is a powerful reminder that growth comes from reflection, persistence, and a willingness to keep learning.
Thank you, Matthew, for returning to campus, sharing your story, and inspiring the next generation of Crossroads chess players.

♟️ Honoring a legacy, celebrating a community. ♟️
Every summer, the Crossroads chess family comes together for the Kyle Weeks Memorial Chess Tournament, hosted by our own chess coach extraordinaire, Howard Granok.
The tournament brings together Crossroads alumni and Gateway Chess League coaches for a day of friendly competition, reconnection, and remembrance, celebrating the lasting impact Kyle had on our community and the game he loved. This year, we were also excited to have current Crossroads chess player Langston join the tournament, bridging generations of Crossroads chess excellence.
Thank you to everyone who participated and helped continue this meaningful tradition. Here’s to honoring the past while inspiring the next generation of Crossroads chess players. ♟️⚡
