Crossroads Wins 9th Grade Division at Lindbergh Chess Tournament

Congratulations to Ernie McCarter, Emanuel Gerbi, Sarah Crawford, Russell Bigham, and Mystik Stargod for placing first as a team in the 9th grade and under division at the Gateway Fall Chess Open on November 15th. The team finished with 15.5 points, 2.5 points ahead of second place Grand Center Arts Academy. Ernie finished in 2nd overall, Emanuel 4th, Russell 5th, and Sarah medalled.

In the high school division, LaVaughn Caradine, Nyla Long, Doug Koller, and Blake Fondren
each finished with 2-2 records. David Dong rounded out the high school team, playing in his
second tournament and facing National Master Kevin Cao in the 2nd round.

The next Saturday tournament is December 6th

We will be playing in the Gateway Board Tournament at Sperreng Middle School

  • 7:30 am (sharp): Depart from Crossroads
  • 7:30 pm: Tournament ends (with awards following)
  • 8:15 pm: Return to school
  • Cost: $12 (cash or check payable to “Gateway Chess League”)

United States Chess Federation membership is required for this tournament. Players must either show proof of membership or purchase membership at the tournament. Please make check payable to “USCF” or “Gateway Chess League”

  • ages 16 and up: $24.00 (add extra $7 for Chess Life Magazine)
  • ages 13 to 15: $20.00 (add $7 for Chess Life)
  • under 13: $16.00 (add $7 for Chess Life)

Students should also bring a lunch or money to purchase food (breakfast, lunch, and snack)

Middle School Chess Continues

We have a match each Tuesday after school on November 25, December 2, 9, and 16. There is a one time cost of $5. We will depart from Crossroads at 3:45 pm. All matches take place at McKinley Classical Junior Academy. An additional parent driver is requested for each match. Please contact Howard for details.

High School Varsity League

Upper school matches will begin December 3rd and will be held on Wednesdays after school. An additional parent driver is requested for away matches. Note that due to a rules change, our middle school players may play on the team if needed.

Upcoming Saturday Tournaments

Attendance at State, plus three additional tournaments (or their equivalent in weekday matches), is required to attend Nationals in Columbus, Ohio next spring.

  • Dec 6 Sperring Middle School, all grades USCF rated tournament
  • Jan 10 Sperring Middle School, all grades (revised location) USCF rated tournament
  • Jan 24 Pattonville High School, all grades USCF rated tournament
  • Feb 21 Wydown Middle School, all grades USCF rated tournament
  • March 28-State Championships, Battle High School, Columbia, MO (HS section is USCF)
