Raised in an educator’s household, Alexis Newsome has always cared deeply about access to quality education for children. As the Director of Admission and the first face and voice prospective students encounter when they come to Crossroads, Alexis was drawn to the school for its mission and values.

“Knowing that Crossroads is willing to work for justice and equity and that our mission statement is more than just words was critical,” she says, adding that recruiting new students is inspiring. “Our students have the space to make their experience their own. I love that I can meet all kinds of different families and students and learn what their dreams and aspirations are related to education.”

Prior to joining Crossroads this summer, Alexis worked Parkway Southwest Middle School. She spearheaded the development of its community garden and horticulture program. Gardening became a passion after the birth of her daughter Kayla, now seven. “Instead of buying a baby food jar of carrots, we decided we could grow our food. We saved money and reduced our exposure to harmful chemicals in our food by creating a backyard buffet.”

In her free time, Alexis spends her time with Kayla, her husband, Corey, and her mom, a retired principal and an inspiration in her professional and personal life. “My mother set a great example as a parent; I try to be tangible and available to my daughter and provide her with different experiences,” including sports (Corey is a high school football coach), dance, and service opportunities. “I want to raise our daughter to be a scholar, an activist, and a philanthropist.” Sounds like the makings of a future Crossroads student!
